Steps to make sure your trademark partner in China is ok to work with

It is critical to find a good vendor of trademark in China.  I would share the below experience in checking the status of a trademark service vendor in China.

  1. Check the basic registration status on China trademark office.  This step is to make sure the firm is a formal agent in CTMO, but if you want to check the firm is active, refer to step two.

Click this page (http://sbj.cnipa.gov.cn/sbdl/) where the status of an agent will be registered.Click this link pointed by the red arrow:

Then you come to the search page, ask the people you are working with to give the name of the firm in Chinese to you, like my firm, it is 一百分知识产权服务成都有限公司.  Note this Chinese name will be shown on the future POA.

Like my firm, you can see it is in good status:

Check whether the firm is active.  To my experience, a lot of firms are registered, but not active.  Ask the firm for prior cases they have done, firms will be able to show you their record by the paid system they use.

Like you can check from Chinese trademark gazette No.1740-1746, with the name of 100IPservice (一百分知识产权), you can find my firm got 954 initial approvals in the past 6 weeks.

Understand the cost of trademark

I started 100IPservice as my own business in the year of 2017.

Back to the beginning of that year, I was legal director of game branch of iQIYI (listed in Nasdaq now).  I was helping my boss searching for a vendor for Korea trademark application.  I happened to have one friend in this area in Korea, very talented people, graduated from Stanford and Seoul university.

Same as you, I searched on Google, surprisingly, price given by my friend is much lower than the ones on Google - this means a great part of money has not been paid to legal service, rather, it is paid to channels, namely someone contributes nothing to trademark service.

So I started learning digital marketing.  I will be able to lower the price for the purpose of clients.  Now 100IPservice files averagely 30 applications per day for clients from China and around the world, with relatively lower cost for clients.

Another thing that helps save money of client is I am good at English.  At the beginning of my career, I have dealt with several patent cases in US district courts, thus you do not have to pay the translation cost.

What's more, some agent will charge you on search, we do it for free.
